2018 Writing Goals – Enough Fucking Around

The Coronal Fire at Totality

Okay, so, I just had a look at my sales numbers for all of 2017, even though I only really had stuff out and rolling for the last quarter. Let’s just say, they were sobering. But sometimes, those little bumps in the road are just what I need to spark this pile of tinder under my rump.

I’ve been sitting here for the last hour making spreadsheets, two hours prior to that entering some contests and doing some attention seeking for Viral Spark, and my little shorty short Kindle books. And most of the afternoon thinking about where I’m at as an author, and where I really want to be.

Let’s just say, it’s not going to be easy. When I tell writing friends in real life that I have another novel slated for Q1 or Q2 next year (depending on how bad the damage report is from the editor, and how long the cover takes, and a billion other things that go along with launching a book), and that I have 4 novel length drafts that I’m working on, in addition to my little stories, they’re kind of like, “wow.”

But they shouldn’t be saying “wow.” They should be asking what the hell my problem is, and why I’m being so slow about everything. I sit around all day and write stuff, and lately falling off my pace a little bit. Maybe it’s the cold, or my latent seasonal depression kicking in, or whatever, it doesn’t matter. The fact is that I’m not going at the pace I need to be going at, which is different than other people. Of course, now that I think about it, many of my author friends are retired and have just as much time to write as I do, that aside.

I’m going to toss some goals out there right now without thinking about it, and we’ll see where I end up at the end of the year. I’m also planning on getting another day job just to tide me over, so I’ll be a little down on time, but you know me, bitching about “not enough time” is an excuse.

Here goes, while I’m motivated and before I lose my nerve:

1/2 a million words! That’s right. I don’t know what that comes out to, but when I finish this post I’ll do the math and tack it onto this paragraph. New words. Blog posts will make up 50-100,000 of this, so I only have 400k to go. Coolzies. (Edit, that’s 1370 words per day all year…I got this, next year I might make it a MILLION!)

AT LEAST one short story submission per month. No crying in my coffee about rejection slips, and honest attempts, including 5 or 6 rounds of edits. Even if I do two the month before, I can’t stack. One shipped off per month, plus whatever else.

Monthly FridayFlashFiction.com submissions. These are less than 100 words each to keep me sharp, and my intent is to have one accepted monthly, but I can’t control the editors, so one submission minimum, and this doesn’t count toward the previous target. I better get started.

3 NEW NOVELS. One is on the way, and I’m waiting on another rejection slip on another. Once I get it, that little monster book is on the way to self-pub for October. (If I land that agent, I’ll count it as a win also, but a professional publisher probably won’t have it out by year end) For my beta readers (love you guys and gals by the way) yes, Stone’s Shadow is going to make an appearance, come hell or high water.

Three new Operation Raindrop stories. There’s like six people reading the series, but I don’t care. I like the story, and I’m putting it up there on kindle for those few devoted fans. So, your welcome. More as I can squeeze them in. No promises on Dark Age though. It’s going to take a good bit of bitching at me to crank another one of those out.

I will be on one panel discussion by the end of the year. I don’t know how. I don’t know when. I don’t even have a plan, but I will get on one. I might need to bend a few rules if I don’t figure this out by November, but groveling will probably be involved.

And this isn’t including my work at the property. Soon as the ground thaws I need to finish my pole barn and knock down some more cedar trees to make room for pastures. Winter is driving me stir crazy and I feel like I’m sitting on my hands.

BUT

I’m here, I’m motivated, and if you need a kick in the ass, just copy everything above to your goal list, and email me monthly progress reports. I make no promises to be nice if you start falling behind, hehe. Okay, now where did I put that calculator?

    1. Off to an okay start. I subbed a flash fiction piece this morning. Hit me while I was eating and it was just a fiddling short idea, ~85 words or so.

    1. Right on! Partners in crime. That’s what I’m talking about. I’ll try to post some frequent updates, perhaps monthly. I’m already 15k words in for the new year. *explody confetti all around*

  1. Haha Great post, Martin. I will not be following your list or emailing you my progress. Haha I’d prefer not to start the year off crying. Great goals though. I look forward to hearing your progress. I hope all goes well, and this year beats your expectations.
I have a suspicion it’s going to be a productive year for me as well. Here’s to an amazing year! Cheers.
